〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Mai
CHARACTER AGE: 18
SERIES: Avatar: The Last Airbender
CHRONOLOGY: Post Smoke and Shadow.
CLASS: Anti-villain, I guess? Unlike most villains in Avatar, Mai doesn't have any fantastical racism or evil agendas that she's pushing. She's just doing it for shits and giggles. With that, she's capable of working for evil people, but even then, she's mostly apathetic to the job. Once she quits working for Azula, she actually assists Team Avatar.
HOUSING: Please pick for me the wackiest housemates you can find!

BACKGROUND:http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Mai here you go!!!

PERSONALITY:
In terms of western animation, there is not a single character who has given less fucks than Mai from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's true. Absolutely nothing seems to enthrall or capture the attention of Mai. Born from a noble family and raised to be almost robotic for the sake of political appearances, Mai has had to suppress her emotions as a child. As a result, she's kind of emotionally stunted. Characters comment on her "gray, dingy aura". Her ex-boyfriend, Zuko, even describes looking at her as "one big blah". Her introduction consists of her throwing knives at a wall out of boredom, but the range of events for which she can remain unmotivated and nonplussed is simply incredible. Everything from her sibling being kidnapped. to kidnapping a bear, to sunsets, to infiltrating a highly guarded nation, to losing an attack on the Earth kingdom, to even victory is met with a dismissive snark and a shrug. At some points, this stunning cloud of apathy can even extend to her own family, as she expressed annoyance for her family grieving over her brother while he was kidnapped. This actually culminated in a rejection of a hostage deal involving her own brother! Her bored apathy is such a dominating trait of her personality, she joined forces with Azula hastily, not giving the truly evil character time to explain her prerogative. The only thing Mai wanted to do was to escape her boring life and have some fun, which Azula could gladly provide. Mai is definitely not nice, as she does not visit Kei Lo, her second boyfriend, in the hospital and she is unbothered as he complains about how dating her has led to an increase in injury. In fact, she mocks him for making such an observation.

As far as being a villain goes, it represents an interesting contradictory point in Mai's personality. Despite being in the Earth Kingdom and dealing with its inhabitants, Mai only gives them the standard nasty attitude that she reserves for everyone. She doesn't seem to have any prejudiced views on races in the Avatar world; she's an egalitarian in the sense that she just hates everyone equally! Also of note, despite her obviously lethal combat style, she never seems to go for direct fatalities. She rather disable and disarm opponents. Unlike most villains, Mai's does what she does simply doesn't have anything better to do. Even while working for the villain, Mai had her limits where she put her foot down due to a conflict of personal interest. This ranged from getting dirty, as when she staunchly refused to get into a pipe system that would lead to her getting covered in slurry despite the possible physical ramifications of facing Azula in combat. In this instance, Mai even states that Azula can toss all the lightning she wants, she's not getting into that pipe. Other examples of her just flat out going "no." and just not giving a fuck include refusing to fight Team Avatar when they try to rescue the Earth Kingdom's bear. Rather than engage Team Avatar and successfully do her duty, Mai instead is so bored with having to watch the bear she forfeits it to Team Avatar without a fight. Perhaps the biggest piece of evidence for her status as The World's Most Half-Assed Villain(tm) is when she attacked Azula and defied her so Zuko and Team Avatar can escape the prison.

Despite this icy introduction, there are softer, warmer and more reactive sides to Mai. Contrasting with her previously noted treatment of her brother, Mai did care deeply enough for him to rescue him twice from being kidnapped and manipulated by her father. This is evidence that once she stops working for Azula, Mai's personality and objectives undergo some slight adjustments. She's still bored, sarcastic, and apathetic, but she treats her brother with more warmth, as seen when she personally rescues him twice and adopts a slightly more relaxed demeanor around him. Additionally, her relationship with Kei Lo shows off a saccharine side seen in her interactions with Zuko. In the comics that take place after the animated series, Mai is seen getting along with both Suki and Aang, showing that she's at least progressed enough to make friends.

Another softer side to Mai is seen in her relationship with Zuko, as the two passionately hate on the sunset together before kissing and discussing how beautiful they are when they hate things together. She has enough value in him as a person to defend him and risk her life to save him after he breaks up with her. Mai was even prepared to aid Zuko even though that could get her killed, or, at the very least, imprisoned for life. Even after she breaks up with him a second time, Mai dates Kei Lo, at first, solely to gain information about a faction that is targeting Zuko. However, even this isn't a total point of soft, mushiness from her. She breaks up with him briefly after he insults her personality and lack of ambition towards the world around her, but they make up by the end of that episode. After she discovers Zuko has been lying to her, she freaks out and breaks up with him again. At some point, she explicitly mentions that Zuko that she's aware she's manipulating Kei Lo's disproportionate feelings for her and she prefers it to be this way as a safety net for her. Even while dating Kei Lo and expressing her contempt for Zuko, she still refuses opportunities to turn on him.

Mai does have times where extreme emotion is provoked from her, but the extreme emotions tend to be on the more frustrated side of the spectrum. When she's broken up with in the series, once by Zuko and once by Kei Lo, she reacts very noticeably compared to her usual composed demeanor. Her uncle implies to Zuko that Mai was devastated by him breaking up with her by a letter he left in her bedroom, and Mai is visibly in tears (a first in the series for her) when Kei Lo and her end their relationship. As of recent issues in the comics, Mai can be rather brutal when it comes to matters of her younger brother. Finally, she can definitely snap and yell when her tone isn't in it's usual hushed but irritated growl, but, usually, Mai expresses her discontent with brief quips. This can be seen when she dryly informs a filthy, defeated Azula and Ty Lee that they lost, or the time she knocked Kei Lo out after it turned out his "date" was just a ruse to get her to join Ozai. As she knocked him unconscious, she informed him that their date was over.

POWER:
Despite not being a bender, Mai is a skilled enough combatant to defeat multiple benders at once. By usually pinning down enemies, Mai would be able to shut down her opponent's movement. By the time she's 18, Mai is skilled enough to hold her own against Azula, the arch villain of the series, who notes that Mai has been practicing and improving her skills.

Physically, Mai does not have any physiology that would allow for superhuman traits and is allegedly just a human. That said, Mai's reflexes seem a bit improbable for an actual person which brings me to this:
I'd like for Mai to have 3 abilities:

1) Enhanced Agility/Reflexes - Mai is very nimble, flexible and agile. She is able to evade multiple attacks in succession while launching counterattacks, and is able to leap great distances both vertically and horizontally. She can outmaneuver and incapacitate several guards without assistance at The Fire Nation's supposedly toughest prison. Additionally, Mai is a great markswoman as she's able to aim for acute locations from far away distances and can even pin moving targets. Basically, I'd like for her to be able to retain her ability to gracefully evade attacks, which includes Azula's lightning. Such a feat in this world would probably be sketch without some sort of power, so I'm adding this to her ability.

2) Weapon Sleeves - Mai is able to generate blades out of her sleeves and pant legs. If Mai is not wearing something that has long sleeves/pantlegs, she will not be able to use this ability at all. Mai is able to change and adjust the weapon, the amount and the concentration of firing, but it will take some time to master these traits. Her weapons can change between darts, stilettos, long bladed knives, single bladed knives, thick knives, shurikens, etc. These weapons have to be projectiles. She will not be able to produce a sword, morning star, a spear, etc. upon thought.

2) Mental Resistance - Because of Mai being described as blah and having a gray and pasty aura, I'd like for Mai to have a kind of muted life force (for those that can sense it). For characters that can sense these things, Mai will still come across as an ordinary human, but there will be something incredibly restrained about her energy. Likewise, any attempts to read Mai's mind on a topic will produce a "surface thought", but nothing further can be reached. For example, a character that can read minds might be able to glean that Mai is hiding something, or feels a different way about an idea than she's presenting, but they won't be able to dig into her mind about it. This ability is completely subconscious. As a result, if Mai is candid or comfortable in her interactions, they will be able to read her mind. In other words, her mental shield only exists if she's mentally restraining herself.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [ Mai isn't quite sure if the recorders are secure. She's infiltrated a country before, and knows that it's actually astonishingly easily. Like, she's a teenage girl and totally did that without problem. She decides to use the voice function because... she actually can't operate the text or video function. Technology is hard for her generation okay?!?!?! ]

Seriously? This place is even bleaker than Omashu. All the buildings look exactly alike, it's just one big bore fest after another. [ It's not like the fire kingdom palaces are the paragon of diverse architecture, but they're sure easier to navigate than this city grid.

But, she's not done. She has even more complaints!!!! ]

Is anyone else just bored out of their mind here? Like, cool, we all have superpowers, but what are we supposed to do with them? And how are they chosen? [ Her powers fit too well. They fit well enough that she's suspicious of this interdimensional kidnapping being on purpose. However, she believes the network isn't very secure, so she'd never reveal what's up her sleeve. ]

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them out. Over tea. [ The video suddenly turns on, giving the viewer of... the view of Mai's jaw from underneath it. ] In person. These communicators are weird. And have so many useless buttons. Does anything here make sense? I feel like I got kidnapped to some Cactus Juice version of the Earth Kingdom. [ She would like to speak to the manager please tbh. ]

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Fuck. This. Mai was not about to be sent to the swamps of South whatever it is to try and mutate an alligator. She didn't care about the location, or the alligator. She cared about not getting dirty, and, as soon as the slide moved onto the filthy, trechaerous, swamp she stood up and leaned outward.

"Nope, that's it. I'm out. I don't care what kind of payment you have for me, there's absolutely no way I'm going to be getting in that swamp. Have you looked at it? It almost looks like sewage."

Her boss insisted, stating that her stealth skills and experiences with diverse terrain made her a good candidate for the job. Still, Mai would find nothing about the swamp appealing. It has no nightlife, it's humid, and there's a lot of dirt.

"I am the worst candidate for the job. I've never even seen an alligator before. How am I supposed to identify it?", Mai pleaded, "I'll take something else; what other jobs do you have for me?"

Her boss showed her an alternative project, but it was halted the moment she heard the word sewers.

"Does it make you giggle sending girls into disgusting environments?! What makes you think I wanna do that either?" Mai was not down to go into the sewers. The location, Paris, wherever that is, was not alluring to her either.

Her boss continued, "But, Mai! It's Paris! There's nightlife, it's of a colder temperature, and the city itself is famed for its romance!" He tried to play up to assuage Mai's previous complaints. Despite how effectively she could get the job done, Mai was notoriously fickle to work with. The best way to work with her was to provide her with an amusing task that could produce a result while being relatively trivial as well. Because Mai is liable to go after a more amusing option, or abandon an assignment all together. As a result, the only jobs they'll consider her for right now are jobs no one else really wants to do.

"You think I care about romance?" Mai's eyes rolled to the back of her head and stayed there for an extended period of time just to emphasize the point. She continued, still rolling her eyes, "Give me a bounty or something entertaining. Because I'm gonna walk if my only job here is smell bad."

"I'm sorry, but those are our only two available missions right now," Despite the preceding apology, her boss didn't have a very sympathetic tone to his voice.

"Ugh. Fine, Lemme think about this," Mai raised her voice a little in a haughty, reactionary response. While normally apathetic to everything around here, Mai was able to play slightly looser with her emotions and feelings than she'd be able to at home. There's no one from her familiar world here, and no need to uphold her family's image. Still, years of repression did not make Mai able to easily emote and being entirely disconnected from her home world makes caring about anything pointless. In some ways, Mai couldn't quite tell if she reached nirvana, or just a new level of apathy that was previously unknown to her. She hadn't quite decided, much like her decision on whether to stink like romantic garbage or a swampy reptilian fart.
